I have stepped back from making any updates referring to SEO tactics of late, as it seems that as soon as I make a statement suggesting ways of getting free traffic to your site using SEO, Google releases an update the negates the said method.

Over the past year or so, the SEO community has been battered by algorithm update after algorithm update, until finally doing offline SEO itself (as in backlinking in order to get better rankings) has been mooted to be against the Google  terms of service (at the time of writing ).

The above may help you to slowly cleanup your backlinking network enough to eventually get back your organic traffic, but a lessons learned exercise from the Google  purge suggests that really no-one should depend on this kind of traffic anymore and perhaps you should concentrate of other traffic sources by syndicating your own content to numerous other online communities.

Remember that Article directories and all of the above are not for backlinking per se, but adding links at the base of your content will bring you traffic from the site in question and so long as you add good content, that content will be syndicated across the web enhancing your incoming traffic.
